The brief

A couple requested a planting plan for a raised bed at the front of their property. They were keen to retain the small trees and wanted to fill in the gaps with wildlife-friendly layered planting to break up the otherwise hard landscaping of the driveway. Whilst only measuring around 5m in length, they were keen to cram in as many planting variations and ecological habitats as possible. They planned to use bird feeders and bug hotels to increase biodiversity. The couple also requested MCGS both source and plant up the space once the design has been agreed.

The Design

The planting is perennial, layered, wildlife friendly and rich, with combinations of alliums, rudbeckias, cosmos, and ground cover. A narrow planting bed has been incorporated under the hedge to bring greater interest when entering the driveway. With a little more budget becoming available the design incorporates also a new ‘old’ brick area in front of the beds to better blend with the house architecture. The range and depth of planting provides a rich and varied experience for guests arriving at the house or viewing the house from the road beyond the back wall.
