Clients: Detached house with wrap-around garden | Private residential | Wakefield | UK

Design: MCGS

The brief

Having fairly recently moved into the house and with children flying the nest, the clients wanted to re-design the garden to get away from the current plain lawn and perimeter planting beds. The clients wanted a garden that had more flow, with distinct ‘destinations’ across the garden, and yet feels part of a coherent whole. The design must provide reasons to travel around the garden corners, and enjoy different focal points, to sit and rest, admire the planting, and to entertain. Wildlife is welcome within the structure, but without clutter or untidy edges. The space is private but enjoys an open feel. Existing trees and shrubs find their rightful place, complemented by new schemes of four seasons planting.

The Design

The solution was to create different focal points around the garden, including a new pergola with seating at the apex of the lawn. The lawns will be re-shaped to provide softer shapes and flow around the site, with a feature path through the lawn creating a destination. Textures will unite the design across different sides of the wrap-around, including aggregate, stone pavers, and steel planters. Existing planting to be retained and the new planting palette defined (currently in progress). The new design provides places to relax, eat, drink, have a firepit with friends, and to also provide interesting shapes and textures, from stone, steel, wood, and lawn.
